The R Word

As many of you know, I am adamantly opposed to the use of the word retard. In the past few weeks I have been amazed at how many really intelligent adults I know who use it.  It even showed up in a book I was reading.  I was so disappointed I am planning on writing the author. If you haven't read this before, take some time now-even if you have, reread it.  It changed my life.  I hope it does the same for you.

  1. I think that some people don't really know the meaning and how much saying that to someone can hurt their feelings. I think more people need to read this because it could change them too.

  2. This is really touching. it really shows why you shouldn't call people retards whether you are joking or not. It makes me stop and wonder why people even have this word in our vocab. Very inspiring.

  3. I have heard you talk about this before and this is very touching and sad people not just adults teenage kids have NO respect now days its horrible the amount of disrespect i see from kids, if i am disrespectful my parents get very upset i have been raised better than that.I "r" word never really hit me until one of my very close friends/family remember became retard from an accident and i hate hearing people say he is retarded or he is a vegetable it makes me just want to scream at them seriously learn some respect. I use to use the "r" word but since the day my friend was in the accident i haven't used it it might slip but its not on purpose. The "r" word needs to be taken out of the English language or all people need to learn how to use it and know the meaning behind it

  4. I remember last year when you gave us this in computers class. I think a lot of people who use the "r" word don't really understand how offensive it is. Because I think if more people took the time to read articles like this there would be fewer people using the word. I think its terrible. It's used as an insult and its terrible that they use it because its like comparing things to a a group of people. In a very negative way.

  5. This takes me back to when we read a article about the r word and how its incorrectly used. Some people don't understand how this word can really hurt somebody and offend them at the same time. If people would realize this, maybe people would understand it better If they were actually to read a article like this. It's not a very nice word to say because it hurts that person. I just don't get how people can use that word it makes you seem ignorant.

  6. I am a huge example of a person that uses the "r" word. I am trying to fix my usage of the word because i was called it a lot and I know how offensive it is.

  7. It amazes me to the extent of how often this word is used. I could not agree anymore as to the displeasure of this word. The story was very touching and I think it was nice to see how the person initially responded to that Facebook thread. The part that hurts me the most about the usage of this word is that most people don't even realize that it is a medical disorder. We grow up in a society today where it is deemed as okay to just throw around a word that relates to a medical condition. I won't lie, I grew up saying this word when I was younger, but last year I found out that I am epileptic. Trust me, it is not fun to be referred to as the kid who had a couple seizures. I just don't understand how people can throw this word around as if it was just a part of their everyday lingo.
